DGCOS membership gains £20,000 contract for Hussey & Briggs
Gary Briggs, Director of Dorset based Hussey & Briggs, had every reason to be glad of the company’s membership of the Double Glazing and Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme (DGCOS); it’s just won the company a £20,000 contract for two conservatories. Gary explains how it came about; “Our customers had moved into the area from Canterbury. In their previous house they’d had a conservatory fitted by a builder and they weren’t happy with the quality of the work. They’d had a few problems with it so they were understandably wary. We visited them and explained about DGCOS. They did some research of their own into the scheme which gave them the confidence to place the order with us. They didn’t even get another quote.”
The property is an end of terrace Victorian house in Bridport, split level with an extension which created an enclosed courtyard. Hussey & Briggs fitted one conservatory in the enclosed courtyard and another on the rear of the extension in the garden. Both lead off the kitchen/dining area and the installation was quite challenging - there is no rear access to the property so everything had to go through the house. “The customers were very pleased with the work,” adds Gary, in fact they thought it was fantastic. The fact that the customer was able to research the scheme – and that they realised DGCOS only allows reputable companies to join, clinched the deal for us.”

DGCOS Peace of Mind pack seals deals
The Peace of Mind pack provided by The Double Glazing and Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme (DGCOS) has proved to be a useful sales tool for The Door & Window Company of Broadstairs. Sue Palmer, Company Director, explains; “We have a good reputation and we joined DGCOS to reinforce that, to give our customers (and ourselves) extra reassurance and back-up. It’s definitely improved our enquiry/conversion rates. We have been in business since 1979 and most of our work is done on recommendation, but we have found our DGCOS membership confirms what people have already heard about us.
“We always leave the DGCOS Peace of Mind pack after our first visit. Many of our customers are older, and unfortunately some have had bad experiences with rogue companies. We have found our DGCOS membership reassures them and reading the Peace of Mind pack in their own time gives them the confidence to place an order when we make the second visit. Also, they recognise Nick Ross as a trustworthy consumer champion, so his endorsement is very useful. We’re refitting our showroom at the moment and we’re hoping to make more use of the eye-catching posters and marketing material supplied form DGCOS.”

DGCOS Is Making a Big Difference for Members
“We became a Founding Member last September and haven’t looked back since. DGCOS has given us the edge. We joined because we believed in the complete package DGCOS has to offer. The leads have been an added bonus.” Ken Rhodes, Managing Director, Ken Rhodes Window & Conservatory Company
“We joined DGCOS because we felt the scheme puts all the elements we want into one package. We’ve won a number of jobs through the scheme and from March 2010 to March 2011 our order input for conservatories has increased significantly by 250% for the corresponding period in the previous financial year. We always use the DGCOS leaflets and the DVD featuring Nick Ross, which our salesmen play while quoting.” Kevin Greenfield, Managing Director, KLG
“We’ve had a number of unexpected leads from DGCOS and converted all of them. We’ve sold a conservatory, a houseful of windows, and following on from an initial order for two sliding sash windows we have completed a further 22 windows and two composite doors for the same client. Homeowners tell us they’ve chosen us because we’re DGCOS members. We love DGCOS’ marketing materials too. We hand out the leaflets when we’re quoting for smaller jobs, and for larger projects we send out a ‘Peace of Mind’ pack and DVD with the quote. Nick Ross’s association with DGCOS is a great asset and definitely helps us to convert sales.” Beverly Hales, Project Manager, Prestige Window Systems
“Being a member of DGCOS helps us differentiate the price difference between us and our competitors. Salespeople are often looking for something different to help them sell more. The meeting we had with DGCOS, where they came out and presented the scheme to my salespeople and trained them on how to use the Point of Sale material was the first time I’ve seen them all to a man excited. My salespeople are regularly telling me that we are definitely winning more orders as a result of being DGCOS members!” John Green, Director, High-Tech Windows

DGCOS Mission in 2011
Tony Pickup, founder of DGCOS, states “In 2011 it is our mission to attract, not the biggest, but the best companies to DGCOS. Our ethos is honesty, ethics and quality and we shall strive to attract those companies who share these fundamental principles. We should be aware of the magnitude of our task but extremely confident that the philosophy, benefits and sheer substance of our organisation can attract the cream of the industry.”
The Double Glazing & Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme (DGCOS) is endorsed by Nick Ross, the former BBC Watchdog and Crimewatch presenter, and he states, “This should be a turning point for double-glazing professionals. Consumers deserve excellence and respect, and the best installers deserve the highest reputation. DGCOS demonstrably delivers both. Homeowners are assured of high standards as well as deposit security, guaranteed workmanship, meaningful warranties and a truly independent Ombudsman with teeth to back up all the pledges. Installers become accredited members of a trustworthy and supportive scheme that improves their leads and raises their status. I urge you to support DGCOS for your own sake, for your customers and for the industry as a whole: become an accredited member and keep the cowboys out in the cold. ” Nick Ross adds: “When Tony Pickup first approached me I was deeply sceptical, but the more I read about DGCOS the more impressed I became. He had obviously done his homework over many years and was proposing precisely the sort of protections that I had always championed and that, when I checked with leading consumer protection agencies, was just what they were praying for. It was a breath of fresh air that someone was proposing to attack the problem with such a comprehension set of solutions. Everything I have seen about DGCOS has only reinforced my opinion that it’s fundamentally a good scheme and will benefit the industry and that’s why I have signed up for three years. We learned at the Conference that the scheme’s credibility and the comprehensive protection is helping members sell more in a difficult market.”
